On August 8th, a surge of intense rain swept through the valley, causing widespread flooding in rivers and streams. The persistent rains, which began on Monday, caused waterlogging in Samakhusi, Buspark Bishnumati and other nearby areas. The Bishnumati, Bagmati and Dhobikhola rivers overflowed, flooding urban and rural areas. Shopkeepers were actively draining their establishments.
The Kathmandu Valley is structurally vulnerable to extreme weather events. This report documents not only the immediate disaster, but the fragility of a city that grows faster than its capacity to respond.
