CR Hope Foundation — School Project in Zanzibar, Tanzania, 2021

In Zanzibar, 140,000 children have no access to school. I went to photograph the effort of those trying to change that.

In Zanzibar, Tanzania, around 140,000 children between the ages of 4 and 15 have no access to school. It was this number that made me want to go.

CR Hope Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded in 2017 with a clear goal: to provide quality education to children and young people in Zanzibar. In January 2020, founder Renos Fountoulakis and local philanthropist Cosiano Ismail Mbise opened the Seeds of Light school — first with pre-school children, now already with first-year students and 53 children supported.

What I found in Kizimkazi was not just a school. It was a space where children learn to read and count, but also to eat together, to play, to rest and to trust. An environment where knowledge and care go hand in hand.

It is exactly this kind of human effort that moves me as a photographer — what happens behind the scenes of a change, in the everyday lives of those who believe that education transforms lives.

This work was awarded the CEWE Photo Award 2023, selected among the best from over half a million photographs submitted from 147 countries.
