What makes me move

It's not in capturing the perfect image, in the most aesthetic or shocking fraction of a second that she puts her photographer's attention, but in the story it contains, in the human effort that is being made to achieve something that feels important in a given context.

The Paradox of Memory: To Live or To Display?

On an ordinary day, the beach on Baía de Ha Long, vietnam, families dressed identically gather in clusters as photographers and phones capture every rehearsed pose. Moments that should be about spontaneous connection are transformed into a choreographed frenzy of documentation, where being together is overshadowed by the need to record. The modern paradox unfolds: living the moment becomes secondary to showcasing it, and genuine interaction is replaced by the spectacle of poses, freezing togetherness into meticulously curated images.

Incessant rain triggers severe flooding across Kathmandu Valley

KATHMANDU, August 8: A deluge of heavy rainfall swept through the Kathmandu Valley, leading to widespread flooding in rivers and streams on Tuesday. The persistent downpours that began on Monday have resulted in inundation across multiple regions. Particularly affected areas include Samakhusi, Buspark Bishnumati, and various other localities. The water levels in key rivers such as Bishnumati, Bagmati, and Dhobikhola have surged considerably due to the ongoing heavy rainfall. The overnight downpour in the valley has caused rivers and streams to breach their banks, causing substantial water logging. Local shopkeepers were observed actively draining water from their establishments, which had been swamped by the intense rain of the previous night.

Quarentined

What happens when a photographer and a nurse are cloistered, for quarantine reasons, in just one space, the house?

The project arises in the context of Covid and, consequently, of my own quarantine.

What two people who barely know each other, who don't speak the same language, do locked in an apartment for 10 days.

The next day, after arriving in Dubai, we were in contact with a person who had Covid... and this is the beginning of our story, of the project... 10 days, together, closed in the same space.

At beginning we started watching movies, talking, we didn't know each other very well.

Me, Portuguese, not very fluent in English, Ajla, Albanian, who moved to Italy at the age of 10 and now lives in Dubai (speaks a lot of languages). The apartment had a wonderful view of the Marina and, in conversation, I commented to Ajla: - If only I had my tripod, I would take the opportunity to take some pictures at the end of the day of this wonderful view. To which Ajla replies: I can be your tripod!, we had a laugh and decided to reproduce the idea.

It was very easy to photograph Ajla and the picture ended up to be very interesting. I asked her if she wanted some portraits. All the photos came out well the first-time.

So, we were just spending time doing what we liked. As the photos were so good, I thought there was potential to do a photo report on the quarantine… I spoke to Ajla who agreed right away... and so our story began.

IDENTITY

The project “Vitor Fernandes / Natasha Semmynova” was born from a proposal to photographically develop the theme Identities.I decided to photograph a Drag Queen known for its emblematic shows of gay nightlife in Porto (Moinho de Vento, Boys “R” Us Club, Pride Bar, among others), in an attempt to demonstrate that a person can have two identities, one without prejudice to the other, in order to demystify the stigma around a Drag Queen. Two months following Vitor's life allowed me to represent 24 hours of his daily routine. The images follow a linear sequential exposure, with the last one taking us back to the first, returning to the initial cycle.

Inem - Stories of limbo

This is a photographic report about the work of Inem (The National Institute of Medical Emergency ) and their daily struggle to save lives. It is divided into six printed photo and a multimedia presentation. The photos represent each story that we see completes in the multimedia presentation.

“The National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) works up every day to try to make a difference: relieve the suffering of those who are seriously ill or immediately life-threatening,trying to make that Life wins. It is not always an easy task, but in every moment, their professionals looking to give their best. Are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Every time the phone rings for another emergency, doctors, nurses and ambulance crews go out to respond to anyone who asks for help, Wherever the victim is. There are children who are born and people who are saved. For others, it's the end of the line. Here it is seen everything. Wins, losses and much, much struggle. On the street or in the home of patients, blood and death are not what most shock. It hurts more the anxiety attack of a distraught mother with the first anniversary of the death of her daughter. Arrepia the cry of a parent to discover that his son was shot in the chest. There are expressions of sadness that does not forget. And images that are not published, so tough they are. Still, this is an area that celebrates life. Everyday Inem makes small miracles happen, winning the race against time and against the disease, allowing people to continue to live, grow, raise a family, fall in love!”

(from 25 years of work INEM, Augusto Brázio and Rita Garcia, 2006)

it's the little things

It's that second we stop running and stay still just for a moment to breathe, reflect, contemplate… when this Thing we call Life keep rolling in high speed.
