Quarantine is a documentary photography project created during Covid-19, in Dubai.

A Portuguese photographer and an Albanian nurse, confined to an apartment for ten days. Two people who barely knew each other, who did not speak the same language, locked in a space with a stunning view of the Dubai Marina.

The day after arriving in Dubai, we found out that we had been in contact with a person who had Covid. Immediate quarantine. And that is how it all began.

At first we talked, watched films, got to know each other. In one conversation, I mentioned to Ajla that if I had my tripod I would take the opportunity to photograph the view at the end of the day. To which she replied: I can be your tripod! We laughed. And decided to try. It was very easy to photograph Ajla — the images looked interesting from the very first shot. I asked her if she wanted to do some portraits. She said yes. And that is how the project was born.

The confinement became a visual narrative about human connection, creativity and what two people do when the world stops — and all they have is a camera and ten days.

This work was presented in a group exhibition at the Holy Art Gallery, London, in 2022.
